Vaccine to help prevent the recurrence of prostate cancer

A vaccine has been developed to help prevent the recurrence of prostate cancer, and potentially other cancers. It’s designed to teach the immune system to recognise compounds found in prostate cancer cells and is being given to men who have already been treated for the cancer. The vaccine is made from pieces of a protein called TARP that’s found in about 95 per cent of prostate cancers. Animal studies have shown that the protein can effectively stimulate the immune system to attack the cancer. Read the article.

Active Surveillance May Be Safe After Prostate Tumor Upgrade

Men with low-risk prostate cancer on active surveillance whose tumors are upgraded after a biopsy might not have to rush into surgery, according to new research. The men in this study had localized low-risk prostate cancer — a Gleason score of 3 + 3 or lower and a clinical stage of T1 or T2. All had a tumor upgrade while being managed with active surveillance The majority of the men who chose to remain on active surveillance after a tumor upgrade, rather than undergo immediate treatment, had no further progression of tumor grade. Sylvester Researchers Report Prevention of Lethal Prostate Cancer with 4-MU Dietary Supplement

In a groundbreaking laboratory study, a research team at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has found that a non-toxic oral agent that is also consumed as an over-the-counter dietary supplement in Europe and Asia for improving liver health, is highly effective in both preventing and treating prostate cancer. Additionally the agent was able to halt the metastatic spread of the disease. “We found that 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) was able to block a key signaling pathway that triggers the development, growth and metastasis of prostate cancer,” said the study’s principal investigator Vinata B. Lokeshwar, …

Vitamin D may keep low-grade prostate cancer from becoming aggressive

Taking vitamin D supplements could slow or even reverse the progression of less aggressive, or low-grade, prostate tumors without the need for surgery or radiation, says Bruce Hollis, Ph.D., who is at the Medical University of South Carolina. Preliminary results from this study indicate that many of the men who received vitamin D showed improvements in their prostate tumors, whereas the tumors in the placebo group either stayed the same or got worse. Also, vitamin D caused dramatic changes in the expression levels of many cell lipids and proteins, particularly those involved in inflammation. “Cancer is associated with inflammation, especially …

Dietary supplements linked to increased cancer risk

Consumers are always looking for ways to minimize their cancer risk, which is one reason why many turn to over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements. But new research finds that while companies promote dietary supplements for their cancer-prevention benefit, some may end up doing more harm than good. Dr. Tim Byers, director for cancer prevention and control at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, conducted a meta-analysis of two decades worth of research — 12 trials that involved more than 300,000 people — and found a number of supplements actually made a person much more likely to develop certain types of …

Pomegranate Health Benefits

Cancer Protection A study from the University of California, Riverside found components of pomegranate juice may stop prostate cancer cells from moving, while also weakening the chemical signals that promote this kind of cancer to spread in the first place. And in a separate study, Israeli researchers found pomegranate juice may prevent and destroy breast cancer cells (though it’s hardly the only cancer-fighting food). Stable PSA Levels Prostate cancer patients may also experience lowered levels of a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) when they drink 8 ounces of pomegranate juice each day, found this study from the University of California, Los Angeles. …
